Airspace closures across parts of the Gulf are continuing to cause significant disruption to international travel. Aviation authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait have implemented temporary restrictions as a precautionary safety measure amid escalating regional tensions.

For thousands of passengers, this has translated into cancelled departures, aircraft being held on the ground, last-minute offloading before take-off, and extended waits at transit airports.

Wonderland Travel is in direct contact with affected customers and monitoring airline updates continuously. If you are currently travelling or due to travel via the region, here is what this means for you.

Why Flights Are Being Cancelled

Airspace closures are enforced by national aviation authorities for safety reasons. Airlines have no discretion once restrictions are issued; they must cancel, reroute or delay services immediately.

Because this is a government-directed safety measure rather than a commercial decision, it falls into the category of “extraordinary circumstances” under aviation regulations. This classification is important when considering compensation rights.

Operational decisions are being made rapidly. Flights that were scheduled to depart may be cancelled within hours, and aircraft already boarded may be offloaded if airspace status changes.

If Your Flight Has Been Cancelled

If you hold a flight-only booking and your service is cancelled due to airspace closure:

You are entitled to choose between a full refund of the unused ticket or re-routing at no additional cost.

Compensation under UK261 regulations is unlikely to apply because cancellations linked to security-related airspace restrictions are considered outside airline control.

If you are stranded overnight, airlines still have a duty of care. This can include reasonable meals and, where necessary, accommodation. Implementation may vary depending on airport location and operational capacity.

Your first point of contact should always be your airline. Check official channels for live updates before travelling to the airport.

If You Booked a Package Holiday

Customers with package bookings are protected under the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

If unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances significantly affect your trip:

You are entitled to a full refund if the holiday cannot proceed. You may be offered a suitable alternative departure date or destination.Additional compensation is not payable in these circumstances.

If you are already abroad on a package holiday, we are responsible for providing assistance and, where required, repatriation arrangements.

If You Are Currently Abroad

Travellers who are stuck in transit or overseas should remain in close communication with their airline regarding rebooking options. Keep receipts for reasonable additional expenses such as accommodation or food. These may be required for airline reimbursement or insurance claims.

You should also check your travel insurance policy wording to understand disruption and delay cover.

For safety updates, monitor guidance from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), which provides real-time advice for British nationals:https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice

If local authorities advise sheltering in place or avoiding movement, follow those instructions immediately.

What Happens Next

This is a fluid situation. Airspace can reopen with little notice, but further closures are also possible depending on regional developments. Airlines are adjusting schedules dynamically, and availability on alternative routes may be limited while demand remains high.

We strongly advise travellers not to proceed to the airport unless their airline has confirmed their flight is operating.
